Membership: Requirements: SIOR Designation: Educational Requirements

Educational Requirements

To earn the SIOR designation, all applicants for Active SIOR membership except as noted below) must fulfill the following educational  requirements.  Applications may be approved subject to the completion of the educational requirement, at which point the applicant will have one year from the date of approval to complete the requirement.  After one year, the application will expire and the applicant will have to submit a new application.  Note: Executive Specialists, Associate applicants, and applicants from outside of Canada, the US, and Mexico have no educational requirement.

Applicants who have 10+ years of experience and can document double the Gross Fee Income GFI) requirement may waive the educational requirement.

There are three options for satisfying the educational requirement:

Comprehensive Membership Entrance Exam
The exam is 200 multiple-choice questions, plus five short essays.  The exam is a basic-knowledge exam covering areas such as leasing, appraisal, tenant/landlord representation, sales skills, construction, investment, environmental issues, and SIOR's Professional Standards.  A study guide addressing the Professional Standards is available.  The exam would be proctored by your local Realtor board. 

To take the exam, please set up an appointment with a proctor at your local Realtor board, and then send the date and time along with the proctor's contact information to the Admissions department by emailing Taylor Miller, Admissions Manager, at tmiller@sior.com .  Please send your payment form prior to or on the date of your exam.  Grades will not be released until payment is received.

RICS Designation
RICS is offered by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
The applicant must have been a RICS designee for at least five 5) years.

Coursework
Complete three 3) mandatory courses and three 3) elective courses based on the following guidelines:

1) Applicants must takeand pass the following mandatory SIOR topics: Ethics & Professional Standards, Construction, and Understanding the Lease Agreement.

2) In addition to 1) above, applicants must provide documentation of taking any passing any of the following programs  to complete the three 3) elective courses:

SIOR Elective Courses - each course qualifies as 1 elective course
SIOR Course 100– 2 elective courses course discontinued)
SIOR Course 103– 1 elective course course discontinued)
SIOR Course 203 - 2 elective courses course discontinued)
SIOR Real Estate Investment & Finance previously part of Course 200) - 1 elective course

Note: Elective course credit is no longer given for attendance at an SIOR Fall World Conference.

CCIM Designation - 3 elective courses; fulfills elective requirement
CCIM Courses: CI 101, 102, 103, or 104 -
1 elective course each for a maximum of 2 elective courses
CPM Designation - 2 elective courses Official designation certificate is required from the IREM.)
RPA Designation - 2 elective courses Official designation certificate is required from BOMI.)
FRI Designation - 2 elective courses Official designation certificate is required from the Real Estate Institute of Canada/l'Institut Canadien de l'immeuble.)
Graduate Degree in Real Estate, Business or Law from an accredited college or university- 2 elective courses Official trans are required.)

Credit is offered for CCIM courses listed above only with written documentation from the CCIM Institute.
