OVERVIEW - Why He’s the Real Deal
An SIOR member for twenty years, Curtis has held many roles within SIOR, including at one time serving as SIOR Foundation President, as an SIOR Regional Director, and as a Chair of many SIOR committees. His commitment to service carries outside of the industry and right into his community with his many years of patronage in regional and civic organizations, holding the position of alderman in his local district for nine years, and most recently becoming the newest elected Mayor of Kankakee, Ill. He’s more than just an SIOR.
HIGHLIGHTS - Get to Know Chris
SIOR Report: What’s one thing about you that surprises most people?
Chris Curtis, SIOR: Many are surprised to know that I had long hair down to the middle of my back and love heavy metal music.
SR: What is the greatest risk you’ve ever taken?
CC: I would have to say it just happened, running for mayor of my hometown. The easy path at this point in my life would have been to continue real estate full time, but I wanted to leverage my business and real estate experience and assist my community to seek its fullest potential.
SR: What is the dumbest way you’ve been injured?
CC: Playing beach volleyball at the first YP event for SIOR in San Diego (2009). My mind thought I was much younger and I dove for the ball with my arm extended to save a shot. I injured my shoulder, which made for a long plane ride home.
SR: What’s the first job you ever had?
CC: Newspaper boy. I delivered three different newspapers with three different routes beginning at age 12.
SR: If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be and why?
CC: An eagle. Something about being able to fly and view the world from high above. It would be a great perspective.
SR: What is something your brain tries to make you do and you have to will yourself not to do it?
CC: Drink Coca-Cola.
SR: What is your biggest regret?
CC: Probably not traveling more after college. I wanted to make money right away and wish I would have spent some extra time traveling the world/country.
SR: I am frightened by ___ and this makes me___
CC: I hate snakes. They are a big reason why I won’t look for lost golf balls in the weeds or desert area. I’ll take the penalty stroke before encountering a snake :)
SR: What book are you currently reading?
CC: Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity
SR: What are some causes you are passionate about?
CC: Coaching grade school cross country. I love to work with kids and help them achieve their goals along with teaching the runners a few life lessons that they may be able to use later on in life. It also allows me to escape the phone for a while and keeps my competitive drive going. I’m also passionate about Kankakee Drug Free Court in my hometown. I’ve served as the Board President and still remain on the board. It allows for individuals that have been arrested on non-violent drug charges to have a second chance versus incarceration.
SR: How do you want people to remember you?
CC: That I was always there for my friends when they needed me.
