SIOR Carolinas Chapter Delivers with an Unforgettable Conference Experience
The picture-perfect Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina’s Lowcountry provided the ideal setting for the SIOR Carolinas Chapter’s fall conference, where more than 150 attendees met for three days of educational sessions, networking, and a myriad of outdoor activities. Noted speakers KC Conway and Brett Swango were on-hand to deliver updates on the current economy and future of the workforce, respectively. While they noted that inflation and interest rates are on the rise, their outlook remains extremely positive for this part of the country.
SIOR Chicago Chapter Funds 25+ McKinley Trunk Scholarships
With a donation of $13,500 from chapter members, the SIOR Chicago Chapter was able to fund 27 trunk scholarships as part of the Ada S. McKinley College-Bound Trunk Scholarship program. Each year, students from the west and south sides of Chicago are selected based on an essay contest and a demonstration of financial need, each receiving a trunk valued at $500, filled with living and learning essentials to begin their college journeys.
SIOR Chicago Chapter Speaker Series Hones in on the State of Capital Markets
Panelists Krista Casper of Associated Bank, Michael Tenteris of Cushman & Wakefield, and James Postweiler of Newmark spoke to more than 60 members and guests as part of the SIOR Chicago Chapter’s Speaker Series. In a discussion moderated by Ryan Moen, SIOR, the speakers focused on the state of capital markets in commercial real estate. They highlighted the importance of having multiple banking relationships since many non-traditional lending sources have disappeared, and that interest rates have taken a toll on underwriting in all asset classes. Currently, most active buyers are all-cash or low levered.

The challenge centered around a commercial development site of regional impact, where each team acted as developers for a high-profile 25-acre site in St. Lucie County, Fla. The top three teams each received scholarships from the SIOR Foundation, and congratulations are in order for the winning team!

Aurilia easily held the attention of the 40 attendees with his motivational wisdom. One of the most striking anecdotes he shared was that of a coach who told him early on that he wasn’t good enough to play in the big leagues. Aurilia had those words top of mind throughout his 15-year career in many well-respected ball clubs, and uses them to encourage audiences like the this to fight through adversity to reach both professional and personal goals.

The central location of the American Brass Restaurant in Long Island City, N.Y., brought out members of the SIOR NYC Downstate Chapter along with several guests to hear the evening’s speaker, Ann Marie Edden, AIA. Edden, a principal at global architecture firm Stantec LLC, counts a $200 million NYCT transit improvement, a K-12 school, and a courthouse amongst her recent projects. She delivered an interactive lecture on NYC Local Law 97, which impacts every building over 25,000 sq. ft. in the city, remarking that it affects every property type and is tantamount to a carbon tax. Following her talk, attendees availed themselves of Edden’s expertise with a spirited round of Q&A.

SIOR Western Missouri-Kansas Chapter’s Development Day Unites the Kansas City CRE Community
Guest speaker Stan Gibson of Oxygen Plus kicked off the SIOR Western Missouri-Kansas Chapter’s Development Day luncheon in Kansas City, Mo. More than 65 guests, including SIOR Global Immediate Past President Patrick Sentner, SIOR, looked on as Charles Connealy, SIOR, presented scholarships to two University of Missouri-Kansas City Lewis Rice Real Estate Center students. Tony Nguyen and Brandon Niesen each received $5,000 from the Hugh Zimmer Memorial Scholarship and Olen Monsees Memorial Scholarship, respectively. An evening at The Grand Ballroom of Union Station in Kansas City with more than 60 exhibitors and 1,400 guests capped off the event, allowing everyone involved in Kansas City commercial real estate to gather in the same room. The successful event can only be summarized as follows: it’s networking, its highlighting new projects, it’s remembering why we love this industry.
